Full-Time Job: Android Software Developer, Los Angeles, CA (Hulu)

Posted: 09 Aug 2013 09:55 AM PDT

Job Title: Android Developer

Job location: Los Angeles, CA

Employer: Hulu

Employment Type: Full-Time Job

Job Description

The mobile development team at Hulu is looking for a software developer with experience building applications for the Android platform. While all members of the team contribute across technologies and products, and from front-end to back-end, this role is focused on reimagining, reworking, enhancing, and improving our Android applications.

In general, we're looking for some track record of app development. We work a lot with media player technologies and web services that power our applications, and expect that a successful candidate would hit the ground running. As a member of a small team, you would be expected to contribute not only to feature development but also to our development culture – from improving our engineering practices, to using new frameworks and languages – in order to ensure that we can build the best application for watching premium video content on the Android platform.

Android Developer | Responsibilities:

  • Architect, design, and implement the next generation of our Android applications.
  • Overcome Android market fragmentation to develop applications that work well on all Android devices that are capable of showing video.
  • Work across UI, service layers, and backend technologies to create server-driven native client solutions.
  • Shine with engineering excellence by developing test infrastructures, writing documentation, ensuring high performance, and following an agile development methodology.
  • Write entirely new code and maintain and update existing code.

Android Developer | Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science, or equivalent experience. Master's is a plus.
  • A strong grasp of computer science fundamentals.
  • Experience developing device applications (iOS, Android, etc), with a preference for experience with shipping applications on the Android platform.
  • Broad cross-disciplinary development experience, including strong experience with agile development practices and test-driven development.
  • In-depth knowledge of web-service/data-driven application architecture.
  • A good sense of what goes into making a successful consumer product.
  • The ability to jump into a project and contribute immediately to both architecture and implementation.
  • Great communication and collaboration skills and a strong teamwork ethic.

Android Developer | Preferred:

  • Java or Scala
  • Ruby, Python, or some other dynamic server-side language.
  • Streaming video to mobile devices.
  • Content security or DRM.
  • Video encoding technologies.
  • Multi-tier web or mobile applications.

Company Description

Hulu's mission is to help people find and enjoy the world's premium video content when, where and how they want it. As we pursue this mission, we aspire to create a service that users, advertisers and content owners unabashedly love.

We are often asked the question "What's it like to work at Hulu?" To which we typically reply: "Well, it is a bit different." How so? Take a read of the below document, which gives a transparent view into the kind of company that Hulu is and aspires to be. Written collectively by the team, "What Defines Hulu?" summarizes our culture, offering a window into how we make decisions and the things we consider important. It's not motherhood and apple pie; there are things about Hulu's culture that many talented people would find quite challenging and not for them. By laying out our culture for all to see, we hope to attract people who are inspired by our culture and — as importantly — to save the time of others who are not inspired by Hulu's admittedly different perspective. We realize we're odd birds and not for everyone.

We have always believed that, if we're good caretakers, Hulu's culture has the potential to be our most valuable asset. In our experience, culture is one of the few things that cannot be copied and is extremely difficult to change once set. As a start-up, Hulu is in the fortunate position to create and nurture a culture that's custom-suited to the mission before us.
